Bitter Sweet SEO

This has been a post that has been building within myself for some time now. Even more so with Dave Naylor touching on the almost never switched off mode that an SEO must endure. Simple, enjoyment of browsing the web is almost overtaken by the need to know why that page was shown as relevant in Google to rank highly for the search term you just entered.

Google Addresses the Duplicate Content Penalty

Over at Google Webmaster Blog they recently posted a new article on “Duplicate Content Due To Scrapers”. Duplicate content has always been a concern and this latest piece by Google is intended to calm the growing murmur of discomfort by most webmasters over their web copy being scraped and used elsewhere by third-party sites like MFA’s (Made For Adsense) blogs, syndication sites and just sites ripping off content like-for-like for whatever reason.

Your 404 Place or Mine

After reading those clever guys over at Search Engine Peoples post regarding Social Media sites and their not-in-service screens it got me thinking about our own situation. Not a not-in-service screen but our own 404 error page.

We are going to be running a selection of video clips on our 404 page from now on – it’ll include music videos young and old, comedy sketches, film snippets and who would have guessed seo / search marketing tutorial tips.

We’ll even have an archive for our 404 selection. So, no longer plain, boring ‘Whoops page not found’ message but more in relation to web 2.0 practices.

What do I reckon will be the outcome of this : perhaps no more than a lost individual might get a peep of some social interaction rather than a page that instructs instead of performs. Heck, its a changing environment right enough and even some irrational changes like this might, and I repeat might, catch on.

Does Article Marketing Still Work for SEO?

Using articles to coincide with an SEO campaign is old hat, its been around for years and over the last year or so I have seen a number of commentators write off its effectiveness. Much more emphasis is put on producing the content live on your own site, via a blog or media distribution page i.e. pdf files for download. But I’m still a believer in article marketing and going by the results of the techniques I use the search engines agree with me.

How Can SEO Help Your Business - The Facts

I have been reading a blog post recently about how SEO can help your business.

Now to be honest the blog article is just surface noise in my opinion – it starts off well enough, sounding out that the creation of a site alone won’t get you found in your niche. Then begins to wobble some when using an example of a website selling ’shoes’ and stating that:

“… when there are 558 million pages resulting from a search for shoes in the UK. ”

Every Site has a Unique Selling Point

Every shopping cart should have one. It’s something that sets you out as different from your competitors and makes online shoppers return again and again to buy from you. It’s called your Unique Selling Point, or USP for short, and it may persuade an online shopper to buy from your site instead of somewhere else.
