The Engrossing World of The SEO Goldfish Bowl

I’m now into my third month of running my seo and internet marketing company full-time. And what a ride on rollers it’s been. It reminds me of going to the supermarket and picking one of those trolleys that seems fine at the beginning then suddenly you realise that one of the coasters isn’t aligned properly and your steering it sideways just to get it to go forward.

I’ve been spammed rotten, had the proverbial knife stuck between my shoulder blades by a previous employer regarding a business venture, suffered social media burn-out that sometimes even the thought of stumbling makes me sick, fed-up to the back teeth hearing about Twitter on Sphinn, taken over the calls that we receive from potential clients and talking until I’m hoarse and finally trying to get a few new ventures up and running. Oh, and the Wifey ain’t too pleased either that I have just increased my working hours to an average around 17 hrs a day.

But its not all been wonky, there has been some good news – I’m now hitting the top pages for one of my clients in a highly competitive market and we’re looking at moving into new offices next month (high possibility) – which is always nice.

So, now that I’m in a wee bit of a better mood I’d like to share with you some sites and news that I have had the pleasure of enjoying. To some this may be old hat, to some it may be nothing-out-of-the-blue, but to me it’s been a delightful break from the norm.

One site I’ve enjoyed visiting is SEO Ninjas (http://www.seoninjas.net) I like their style and they remind me of a newspaper columnist that was around years back when I was a kid – the person never revealed themselves and visited local bars and restaurants then reviewed them with a passion – mostly with great embarrassment to the establishments he visited. Perhaps this could be a feature for someone to take on-board and review seo / sem companies in this way?

Being mostly on-line we strike up all sort of friendships or become familiar with certain individuals due to their presence. We’ll today I had a listen at Lyndoman from www.cornwallseo.com fame. It was a great interview but I just expected Lyndoman to be speaking much more like the Cornwall dialect. You can hear the interview with Lyndon at http://perfcast.performancing.com/lyndon-antcliff-lyndomancornwallseo-interview/

I did a search on Google the other day for sphinn and found a ppc advert running against it from Gabriel Goldberg’s blog (http://seoroi.com) I like Gab – he has a lot to say and says it well – he is also quite a regular over at seomoz – where I’m more of a browser - but I can’t fathom out why he would do this. But if my info is correct he’s a law student and I run a law blog so then, perhaps, I do understand after all – lawyers ain’t stupid!

I want to share a few wee bits of gossip here, more to do with the local scene but still an interest to the many. The seo competition that I used to run on this blog will be making a comeback – now it has nought to do with myself – I received a very nice phone call from a gentleman, that at this moment shall remain nameless, who is going to be taken over its reigns.

Also another well known Scottish SEO compatriot told me some excellent news that I’m just bursting to blurt out … but I have given my promise not to do so. When it does come to light you can always say that you didn’t hear it from here first ;)

I just love Lee Odden’s blog and I’m considerably jealous of the big man’s post about the fallacy of the seo celebrity (http://www.toprankblog.com/2008/02/the-fallacy-of-seo-celebrity/) … now, I don’t know if Lee coined the following phrase or not — “it’ll be tough to pay the bills with a wallet full of famous” but its a glorious quote and I fully expect it to be reprinted again and again and again. It’s just a perfect handle on the modern-wannabe culture that we exist within captured for eternity.

My final contribution for this post is to coin-in on Lee’s post which I also feel is relevant to a young pup like myself still getting excited by the bubble-making machine in this mad goldfish-bowl like world which we label as search engine marketing.

The above video is a joke - a parody - please don’t take it serious.
