Damn just beaten in the International results. I swear my rankings drop at the end of each month before you do this.

I have seen you post these a few times. What are the variables you use in determining the rank?

@ James: Yeah I noticed you bossing the SERPS mid-month. Any ideas as to why you fall away at the end?

@ David: Here’s the UK SEO league rules. There being updated next month. But its a good point that I think I’ll include the rules link with each new post.

Its based on the ranking the SEO company achieves for SEO based keyterms. Exact info is at the bottom of:

I distributed some Wordpress themes, I think as you get an influx of links you jump up quite a bit but then as it settles down you drop down a little. Thats the only explanation I can think of really. I have been focusing on Web Design recently (page 2) so I may slip a little in the SEO terms. Going from Page 2 to Page 1 is quite a ball ache for terms like that.

David its all being updated next month, I’ll make a post next week some time with the new rules.

It was the spelling nag in Google that got the vote for ‘z’ over ’s’. :)

hmm….would be interesting to know whether any of these companies listed actually got any conversions (or even leads) out of these rankings. Anyone care to share?

@Lisa We seem to get better traffic and ok conversion from ranking for SEO compared to SEO UK, SEO Company etc.

We don’t rank to well for Search Engine Optimisation so not sure how well that would perform.

I don’t really monitor our own inquiries thoroughly enough to comment in much detail really. I might make that my new years resolution

  12. Paul said,

The keyword ‘SEO’ does bring the traffic and I know when 360 ranked 5th or 6th for that they were getting 2/3 good enquiries per day.

‘SEO Company’ has brought me just less than 200 visitors since the end of August 07. But I’ve always been in the hoodoo position of 8th or 9 th.

Since I’ve shot up quite a few hopefully more traffic, perhaps. :)

Thanks for the rules. I guess it was a good move using the yank variation since they seem to have their ranking pretty well dampened on Google.co.uk.

I have noticed that a lot of you guys have are knocking around on page two on Google.co.uk. I’ve started checking SEO lately and was surprised to see NSM. I thought it would have been riddled with spam brutes.

I’m surprised none of you have tried to target SEO/search engine optimisation quote. I always find that keywords with action activators such as quote and buy provide very good conversions and they are often enough to sustain a new business with a new domain straight away.

@Dolphin: Noticed you are bottom of page 1 for SEO Quote. any news? It is pretty darn easy keyword. Also I have a PHP class I use to monitor the searched keyword, time on site, browsre and all that garb if you would like it.

I would think that client traffic and client revenues would be in the formula. Ranking for SEO terms seems bland. what results do you get for clients????

  21. Paul said,

    Wrote on January 6, 2008 @ 11:37 am

Jim I’m not too sure about that. Would your clients be happy about you handing over there information to a 3rd party? I think not. ;-)

Its all a bit of fun anyways Jim - no need to take it seriously. Everybody that participates sees it as an ego comp than anything else.

We’re expanding the keyword terms for this years entrants and if this helps promote a companies brand and bring in a few extra clients then good for them.

  22. Jim Corkern said,

    Wrote on January 6, 2008 @ 8:41 pm

I was not trying to be critical :) I see these comments and competitions by SEO’s all over the net, and what we as a group promote our ego’s(yes, i have been guilty).

I just for one wanted to remind myself and my fellow SEO’s that we can try to feed our ego, but the true measure of our success is doing our job well enough that our clients make money from what we do.

sorry but i dont get how you can arrive at the “top seo” accolade for a number of these. first, just because a company ranks for phrases that YOU consider competitive does not make it an SEO company. i checked a couple of those that you consider to be top and they dont even rank for the terms they appear to be targetting, neither do they rank for the terms you claim are the most competitive

its often said of seo companies that just because they rank high it doesnt mean they are any good. there are a number of charlatans on page one in google for the real competitive searches because they literally spam the serps with links (and that is all they do for their clients too!!)

    complete tosh. sorry ;)

  29. Paul said,

    Wrote on January 30, 2008 @ 11:00 am

Erm … why are you pointing to a post that is over a month old WHEN you should know that Google is in constant flux.

Also the competition is over Google, Yahoo and MSN. Because we all know that when you do it right, you can expect to rank well across all the top search engines.

I do like the word “Tosh”, however, I think you’ll find that the charlatan seo companies can even be seen in the ones with the big names … ever heard of Monkey Tennis SEO?

One more thing — I don’t normally allow comments to stand from anonymous posters - I like people who can stand behind their comments and show a little bit of balls to what they are saying.

paul - well i would have posted a link to my website if i wanted some link bait (and kiddy server attacks for making a critical comment - yes it happens!) But you see this is your your blog and you invite comments. If you dont want anon comments dont publish them. But you will cos this list thing is, afterall, link bait. Right? Plus it’s not as if i am posting anything libellous, simply a matter of opinion, it just happens it is different to the others already posted.

as for this being a month old and flux..what sort of flux would cause a ‘top seo’ company to disappear from the serps for these so called competitive phrases in less than 30 days. you consider an seo company to be top because of a points system you have devised based on a select number of keyphrases. yet think its perfectly reasonable for the ranks they had 30 days ago to be lost today?

I’m sure a number of seo’s could come up with a points system based on a list of keyterms they rank in the top 10 for ;)

i do agree that charlatans exist amongst the so called ‘big’ names of seo but you might ask yourself is ‘charlatan’ fair? is it not simply that they price WAY out of the market in order to attract the deep pockets of the corporate marketing departments?

I will gladly stand behind my comments here and over at Webworkshop seo forum where you can “check out my balls” :)

Have you checked the rules and the point scoring? Its concerned with UK search engines not .com. Although, this year the international is .com based. Only the top ten score so if you fall from the top ten, and it does happen, then you wont score. Its quite simple really.

Nice balls by the way! :)

well…not hung up as such but SEO companies that use lists like this to give themself the kudos of being a top seo when actually they dont have a clue irks me because when we get someone on board who has had bad experiences i have to work twice as hard in convincing them we arent all clueless and full of sh*t. I looked at some sites and some of the case studies are alarming. (IMO publishing the ranks you have achived on xx/xx/xxxx is NOT a good idea :S)

Anyway i was sent the link so I took a big old bite. Sparked a debate at wws too…and you got a link ;)

oooh nerve touched. you have a public blog. if you dont want me to come on your blog and make a comment you dont like then maybe you either shouldnt blog and invite comments, or how about simply not approving my comment.

why have you assumed i am referring to you? as it happens i wasn’t. But there are a couple of companies you listed as ‘top seo’s that really do need a reality check. they are not top seo’s they just went all out to get on your list so they could say “look…we are one of the top 10 seos in the UK…blah blah blah”. meanwhile their client held to annual contract iswondering where the conversions are for “long tail never searched in location” keyphrases.

  37. Paul said,

Kay that’s not how your last piece came across. And no nerve touched - I have been in plenty of forums before to understand the mindset.

I don’t run flame wars on this blog so please respect my space as I would yours. :)

I take your comment on-board regarding how someone else may distribute that information, we run this for fun only.

We have great debate and a good laugh. We certainly don’t spend any more time obsessing about the search terms than you do in your forum.

Perhaps its time this piece of linkbait has run its course when people like yourself start to treat it ever so seriously then maybe the time has come indeed to can it.
