A recent eCommerce project brought about the challenge of re-designing the URL involved with the internal pages of the site. Straight away, my internal thoughts said, “Keywords present, dashes seperated, lowercase, nice clean URL’s. Simples!” But this nagging feeling inside, wouldn’t go away. I wanted to make sure what I had read and practiced was actually the best way to proceed in today’s forever changing search environment.
By Jove, Jeeves is Back!
Ask.com has brought back their popular man-servant ‘Jeeves’ as part of a UK facelift to entice more searchers to use their search engine instead of Google et al.
Jeeves, himself looks confident in his new look, displaying the thumbs in his jacket lapels displays a very assured look, indeed. Not only, has Ask brought out Jeeves from a 3 year retirement, they’ve also let him loose with their Twitter account (although, their pushing everything through the Hootsuite Toolbar, so expect ads very soon) and also bundled a Facebook profile with him as well, which should be fun.
Ask are hoping the new look will help bump up the numbers of the search engine : they claim it has 15 million monthly UK users.

SEO Ayrshire More Difficult To Rank For Than You’d Imagine
I remember when life used to be simple, not anymore. Jings, its even getting tough for me to rank #1 for SEO Ayrshire! Myself and Boydie (Colin Boyd) used to slug it out for the coveted prize, although to be fair I don’t think Boydie was ever really aware I was trying to topple him. He’s got Ayrshire in his domain, makes it a wee bit tougher. Any whoo, Boydie, sorta gave up the ghost on his blog, for a bit, leaving the door open for your’s truly to take the mantle and then … whack! Google and Dave Naylor, pull the rug from my feet.
Google Shows Local Results for Generic Search Terms
Google has recently begun serving up local results for generic terms. I first noticed the change on Sunday the 5th of April, but plenty have witnessed the change earlier on different datacentres. So, what does it all mean? Well generic terms are one or two word search queries such as ‘plumber’ or ‘bingo halls’, which are semantic noun searches. Now when I type into Google, ‘plumber’ or ‘bingo halls’, I am given a local business map result along with my organic and paid search placements.
The Power of Blogging
Today, I’m gonna stand-up and speak about that ol’ friend we call the blog post – remember, when the majority of us used to blog constantly – until micro-blogging platforms such as Twitter and Plurk came along. I know there are some amongst us that continue to blog, as their main portal for spreading information – and you know what? More power to you, is what I say! Recently, I have witnessed first hand, several clients websites capturing their main targetted keywords from the power of the blogpost. They haven’t bought the services of an SEO company or a link building specialist… sure, they might have done so in the past, but it is only when they turned to producing unique, well-worthy blog content within their site, have they, overtime, at last reaped the benefits they were after all along.
Dev Basu Interview – Local SEO
In my constant quest to understand better the knowledge surrounding search marketing I run a few interviews with guys and gals who understand every nook n’ crannie of their niche. I am delighted to bring you my recent interview with Dev Basu, about Local SEO. Here’s the interview :
Mobile SEO – Its Like Your Website with Skates On
The other night there, when I was being Dad’s taxi picking up my eldest, on the road home I thought I’d try some conversation to help cut into the journey, however no matter how I tried to converse, it fell foul to her undue attention to her mobile phone. ‘What you doing?’ I quipped. ‘Browsing the web’, she replied. ‘Can you bring up my site?’ I asked. ‘Nah!’ She responded (*sigh* I hate teenagers!) But it got me thinking, no, not how much I hate teenagers, but how more-and-more of us are interacting with the web via our mobiles, and why mobile seo should be wrapped with any website project.

A Non-Geek Lost at a Geek Conference
OK, I’m the other one in the business, the one that doesn’t speak, blog … in fact I don’t do much when it comes to the NSM Blog except listen to Paul complain, grumble and moan about me not doing anything with the NSM Blog. Anywhoo … moving along, in December 2008 my business partner Paul (@NorthSouthMedia) suggested that we attend #thinkvisability at Leeds, well not being into SEO and interwebby things I thought it’s not really for me. After a few months of persuasion (see bribing … there will be beer) I decided to
“tag” along.
7 Things You Didn’t Know About Me
OK, I got caught up in this little craze going around, by Richard at MakakMedia and thought, sure I could go for some of this, why not. Anyways the rules of the game according to the meme are as follows :

- Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names and the links to their blogs. (see below)
- Let them know they’ve been tagged. (you’ll just have to trust trackbacks and such)
